A non-invasive Japanese Privet? You got it! Kindly Ligustrum (Ligustrum japonicum) has all the benefits of its problematic forebears with one super beneficial twist – it is seedless. Growing 4-6 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide, Kindly Ligustrum is a stately landscaping evergreen with waxy, dark green leaves on sturdy, upright branches. This privet can be allowed to grow its natural shape while also tolerating heavy pruning and shaping. Kindly Ligustrum even produces clusters of bright white flowers in the spring and summer.
Kindly Ligustrum is deer resistant and drought tolerant. This evergreen shrub can be grown alone or planted as a neat hedge. Privet is often used as a foundation or landscape plant, and Kindly Ligustrum is excellent for this application. Kindly Ligustrum is deer resistant, making it an ideal plant for those yards close to wooded areas. The flowers of Kindly Ligustrum have been described as being pungent and attract many pollinators.
Kindly Ligustrum Care
Kindly Ligustrum is not particular about soil type, though well-draining soil is ideal. This evergreen can be planted in full to part sun, but produces the best leaf color when it receives 6+ hours of sun. To plant, dig a hole that is twice the width and as deep as the root ball. Amend soil as needed. Water Kindly Ligustrum deeply during the hottest part of the year. Fertilize Kindly Ligustrum in the early spring with a slow-release shrub or evergreen fertilizer.
Kindly Ligustrum develops an attractive natural shape without any shaping. However, if shaping is desired, Kindly Ligustrum responds well. Kindly Ligustrum can be pruned lightly throughout the year, though heavy pruning and rejuvenating should be reserved for late winter or early spring.
Kindly Ligustrum Spacing
To create a hedge, plant Kindly Ligustrum about 4-5 feet apart. Allow for more room when keeping Kindly Ligustrum as an individual plant, about 7-8 feet.
