Kodiak Orange Diervilla is an eco-friendly alternative to burning bush which can be invasive in some areas. Its glowing orange fall foliage will light up your garden. New spring growth is russet red which darkens to a pretty shade of green as it matures. The bright yellow flowers that appear in early summer are lovely too. Diervilla is sometimes called "bush honeysuckle," but it’s not invasive like some honeysuckles can be.
This deciduous shrub can be used in mass plantings, borders and container gardens. It’s also a good choice for erosion control on slopes. This multi-stemmed shrub will reach 3 to 4 feet in height and width at maturity. Flowers appear in clusters at the ends of new growth.
Kodiak Orange Diervilla Care
Kodiak Orange Diervilla is deer resistant and its flowers attract bees, hummingbirds and butterflies. It’s drought-tolerant and can survive long periods without rain or watering once established. Kodiak Orange Diervilla can be grown in sun or shade conditions in most soils in USDA hardiness zones 4 to 7. The color is more vibrant when this shrub receives at least a half-day of sunlight. This shrub is low to no maintenance but should be trimmed in early spring if any die-back or broken branches occur over the winter months. A slow-release all-purpose fertilizer may be applied in the spring if desired.
Kodiak Orange Diervilla Spacing
In mass plantings, space each Diervilla at least 5 feet apart, center on center. To create a garden border, plant the shrubs 4 feet, center on center.
