Growing Zones
Ornamental grasses are excellent for adding height and texture to a landscape, and the Korean Feather Reed Grass, also known as Calamagrostis brachytricha, delivers on both of those fronts while also providing color. Thin, wispy green foliage has a fountain-like look. Tall silver flower plumes with hints of pink and a feathery texture bloom in the early fall. The flowers mature into tan-colored seed pods by late fall at the same time, the foliage settles into yellow and beige hues.
This striking clump-forming grass has an upright growth habit and will reach 3 to 4 feet tall. Plant several of these grasses in a row to create a border or conceal a foundation wall. The height and texture will anchor a bed or a mass planting. Grow this grass as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 8.
Korean Feather Reed Grass Care
This is a versatile plant that can handle full sun to partial shade. Plants grown in full sun will need water more often, but generally, water when the top few inches of soil dry out. Soil should promote drainage. A layer of organic mulch spread around the base of the plant each spring will support new growth or feed the plant using a balanced fertilizer.
Cut back all growth in late winter. Korean Feather Reed Grass can be propagated through division every 4 to 5 years.
Korean Feather Reed Grass Spacing
Korean Feather Reed Grass is a clump-forming perennial grass that grows 3 to 4 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. Space plants 2 to 3 feet apart to create a row or mass planting.
