Viburnums are one of the workhorses of the garden. They have fantastically fragrant blooms early in the spring that attract many beneficial pollinators. The leathery, deep green leaves cover the branches in a dense mass. The branches grow in an appealing vase shape. The fall weather brings red berries that mature to a metallic black, along with beautiful foliage color in maroons and reds. Korean Spice Viburnum is a subtle stunner.
Viburnum is useful planted as a foundation shrub, is considered in firewise planting plans and is at home in the cottage garden or used as informal hedging. A beautiful shrub that almost takes care of itself, this one does not require much pruning or watering.
Korean Spice Viburnum Care
Plant Viburnum in any well-drained, but moist, soil. Extra irrigation may be needed until these shrubs establish and mature. The pH of the soil is not very important. Soil on the fertile side is more desirable. Mulching in the fall with organic compost or leaves will help to feed the soil and bulk it up with organic matter, making the soil more moisture retentive over time. A full sun to a partly shady spot is ideal.
Pruning should only be done after the blooms finish. Deadheading of the blooms will result in no berries for the fall and winter. Shape this shrub in stages. Do not remove more than one third of the shrub in any year.
Korean Spice Viburnum Spacing
Viburnums come in a range of sizes from somewhat small to tree-like large. Korean Spice is in the middle range, maturing to a height of 6-8 feet and width of 6-8 feet. Space plants 6 feet apart when growing Korean Spice Viburnum as an informal hedge.
