The bright, sunny yellow flowers of the Ladybird™ Sunglow Texas Primrose will brighten up any bed or planter. The bell-shaped flowers adorn the plant in the spring and summer and complement the wispy green foliage. This perennial plant is native to North America and thrives in USDA growing zones 8, 9, and 10. Also known as Calylophus, this plant is low maintenance, and once established, it will do very well with minimal care.
This mounding trailing plant prefers warm, dry environments, and it is a great choice for borders, edging, landscape, and mass plantings. Add the Ladybird™ Sunglow Texas Primrose to containers or hanging baskets, and the flowers will cascade over the sides with trailing stems reaching up to 12 inches in length. This plant attracts bees, birds, and butterflies, but it is deer-resistant, so it is an excellent option for areas with a large deer population.
Ladybird Sunglow Texas Primrose Plant Care
Primrose thrives with lots of sunlight, and the Ladybird™ Sunglow Texas variety needs at least 6 hours of sunlight exposure each day to bloom and look its best. This plant also likes to dry out, and established plants may not need to be watered unless there is a drought or extended dry period. Wait until the top several inches of the soil are dry before watering container plants. Use well-draining soil with a pH of 6.6-8.5. Feed the plant in the spring and partway through the growing season to encourage new growth.
Keeping with its low maintenance reputation, this plant does not require much, if any, pruning. Spent flowers usually fall away, but you can remove any that have yet to fall off. If the plant starts to look overgrown, you can trim back about ⅓ of the growth to clean up the look. Feed the plant after pruning to encourage more growth.
Ladybird Sunglow Texas Primrose Plant Spacing
Space plants about 8 to 12 inches apart when planting. These mounding trailing plants can grow 4 to 8 inches in height and reach about 12 to 20 inches out from the center. A 12-inch container can comfortably fit about 2 to 3 plants.
