Lady’s Mantle is a lush perennial that provides consistent greenery with very little care required. Also known as Alchemilla mollis, this plant boasts large gray-green foliage with scalloped edges and a slight wave. Small, star-shaped flowers are chartreuse in color and bloom in clusters by late spring. The flowers are lovely, but the dense foliage steals the show and is why most gardeners select this plant.
This beauty is a clump-forming, mounded perennial with a tendency to spread out. Plant Lady’s Mantle in beds or borders or create a very full groundcover. As a herbaceous perennial, the growth will die back each fall, but this fast-growing plant can easily overwhelm a space during the growing season, so give it room to roam or be ready to cut it back to fit your space. This plant is both deer and rabbit resistant for dependable greenery and grows as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 8.
Lady’s Mantle Care
This plant needs medium-quality soil that is slightly acidic to neutral and moist but well-drained. Plant in full sun or partial shade, but opt for an area with more shade when grown in warm climates. Water when the top few inches of soil dry out. This plant seldom needs to be fertilized, but a dose of balanced fertilizer can be beneficial if grown in poor-quality soil.
Deadhead this plant to prevent it from self-seeding and routinely cut it back or thin out the planting if it starts to overstep its bounds.
Lady’s Mantle Spacing
Lady’s Mantle is a mounded plant that will grow 8 to 10 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. Plants can be spaced as close as 18 to 24 inches apart.
