Sometimes the best things do come in tiny packages. This hosta is a head-turner with so many beautiful details to catch the eye, yet only reaches 10 inches high. Lakeside Paisley Print’s broad heart-shaped green leaves have ruffled edges with bright feathered centers of cream. all this in a package only ten inches high. Adding to the drama, the pale lavender flowers emerge on cream scapes up to 24 inches high in mid-summer, beckoning hummingbirds. The leaves are sturdy and may help resist slugs. Lakeside Paisley Print won the Hosta Growers’ Association’s Hosta of the Year award in 2019.
This hosta hybrid measures at a neat 20 inches across, making it a stunning focal point for an eye-level container, a standout in the mixed border, or a gorgeous edging for a shaded garden bed. The broad leaves offer an exciting contrast to the more typical fine-textured perennials and shrubs in American gardens. In the garden, hostas are versatile players. They can fill in spaces left by spring flowering bulbs or ephemerals, add color and fragrance to the darker corners of the garden, and can even thrive in challenging city conditions amid air pollution.
Lakeside Paisley Print Hosta Care
Find a spot with partial to full shade to showcase your Lakeside Paisley Print. You’ll find an east-facing location may brighten the variegation, while a north-facing one may turn it more pale chartreuse. Afternoon sun, from a west-facing exposure, could cause sun scorch. Lakeside Paisley Print can thrive in fertile or average soil. Regarding pH, it would prefer soils with neutral or acidic ph. When planting, place the growing points, or eyes, near the surface. It would prefer sandy loam over clay for optimal drainage. For the plant’s first few winters, you can help your hostas stay put in winter freeze-thaw cycles with a thick layer of finely shredded organic mulch.
While hostas are somewhat drought tolerant once established, you’ll see the most luxurious growth with consistent watering during the growing season, especially as the leaves are emerging. They are not heavy feeders, so if you like, apply a slow-release fertilizer in spring. Early spring, just before the leaves come out is the ideal time to begin baiting for slugs if they are problematic in your region. (Typically, you’ll need to reapply after it rains.) It is also helpful to remove spent leaves in the fall, where eggs may have been.
Lakeside Paisley Print Hosta Spacing
Lakeside Paisley Print would like about twenty inches between plants for ideal air circulation and rootspace.
