Don’t let the delicate name fool you—this Rose of Sharon commands attention! Whether you site it as a single anchor in a planting bed, mass it in a large landscape or use it as a hedge, Lavender Chiffon® is a standout with its large pink-lavender blooms and stall, upright stature. Despite its substantial presence, this plant requires practically no care once established and is very long lived in the garden. Rose of Sharon shrubs aren’t bothered by winter salt when they are planted near roads, driveways and sidewalks. And Bambi tends to walk on by in search of something tastier too!
In the springtime, the bare branches of Lavender Chiffon® burst alive with tender new leaves. The shrub serves as a deep green backdrop for any nearby spring flowers, then it steals the show when its large, double lilac-pink flower buds unfurl from fat buds. Pollinators go wild for the abundant nectar those blooms provide. Even in winter, the seed pods add an interesting element to the leafless branches.
Lavender Chiffon Rose of Sharon Care
The main thing Rose of Sharon shrubs need is sun, the more the better. They will accept some shade, but the flowering will be less intense. This is truly a low-care plant, all it wants is average soil and water to become established during its first growing season, then you can sit back and forget it. If you want to fertilize, you can scratch a little slow-release granular fertilizer around the base of the plant in spring, but it’s really not necessary.
Pruning Lavender Chiffon Rose of Sharon is not necessary because the plant produces flower on new wood (new branches grown this year). Some people do prune during late winter or early spring to help rejuvenate the plant or to help keep the shape. You may trim dead and sick growth at anytime of the year to help the appearance. You can also train this plant to grow into a small tree if cut correctly.
Lavender Chiffon Rose of Sharon Spacing
This is a substantial shrub at 8-12 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide so be sure to consider its mature size when you plant it. Any adjacent perennials or shrubs should be sited 4 feet away from the trunk on all sides. If you are planting a hedge or mass of Lavender Chiffon® Rose of Sharon, pull them a little closer, about 2.5-3 feet center on center. This way, with their upright growth habit, they will blend together as they grow, creating a cohesive planting or hedge.
