Growing Zones
The Lemon Cutie® Barberry introduces bold color and texture into a landscape without the invasive qualities common to other cultivars. Also known as Berberis, this shrub features a dense, compact form and tiny, brilliant, gold foliage. This plant is sterile and does not produce berries, so it does not self-seed and spread.
Use the Lemon Cutie® Barberry to create a hedge, line a walkway, or divide an area. This deciduous shrub has a full and dense growth habit and is deer resistant, making it an excellent addition to areas with large deer populations. Grow Lemon Cutie® as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 9.
Lemon Cutie® Barberry Care
The Lemon Cutie® Barberry grows well in full sun to partial shade, but the foliage will have a more intense golden color when it receives at least 6 hours of sunlight. Plant Lemon Cutie® in acidic to slightly alkaline soil with medium moisture and good drainage. Established plants have medium to low water needs. This Barberry is drought tolerant, but be sure to water during a dry spell to help the plant thrive. This shrub is not a heavy feeder; fertilizing every 2 to 3 years is plenty to support abundant growth. Use a balanced fertilizer during the early spring before new growth emerges.
This slow-growing Barberry has a naturally rounded form. Shape the plant as needed during the early spring and remove no more than one-third of the growth.
Lemon Cutie® Barberry Spacing
The Lemon Cutie® Barberry has a dense, compact, and bushy form. The woody stems have thorns and reach 18 to 24 inches tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. Space these shrubs 18 to 24 inches apart to create a uniform hedge or mass planting.
