The Leonard Messel Magnolia is a showstopper that puts on a lovely floral display in late April. This plant is so eager to welcome spring that the star-shaped, purple flowers bloom before the leaves emerge. The flowers are 4 inches wide and have strap-like petals. Magnolias have a low-branched, upright growth habit that takes on a rounded form with age. The branches have a gray-colored bark.

Plant this beauty in beds or borders or create a focal point in a landscape. Trim the flowers to feature in an arrangement and further enjoy the blooms. The flowers attract birds and butterflies, so it is also a valuable addition to an outdoor space. This cultivar grows as a perennial in zones 4 through 8, but it is known to be frost-hardy, making it a good choice for colder climates.

Leonard Messel Magnolia Care

Magnolia trees need neutral to acidic, rich soil that is moist but well drained. Plant Leonard Messel in full to partial sun because this deciduous perennial needs plenty of light to bloom. New plants need regular watering, while established plants have average water needs. Feed it during the spring using a balanced, organic fertilizer formulated for acid-loving shrubs and trees.

Plant the Leonard Messel Magnolia when the tree is dormant, either during the fall in warm climates or during the spring in colder regions. Prune this plant as needed in mid-summer after the flowers have faded and the leaves have filled in.

Leonard Messel Magnolia Spacing

The Leonard Messel Magnolia has an upright, woody structure and will reach 20 to 25 feet tall and wide. Space plants 20 feet apart to allow them to reach their mature size.

    Healthy Plants!!

Posted by Jessica Ham on Oct 11, 2023

These trees were my 2nd purchase from Plant Addicts and I trusted them because my first order is thriving! With the Texas heat, some plants arrive and say they are hardy to the area, but are too small and frail to survive, even if you give them time to acclimate before planting. Plant Addicts plants are hearty and strong before they ship. Even if the heat gets them at first, they are healthy and strong and big enough to recover and flourish.

    Great tree; horrible delivery...

Posted by Darrin Ebel on Aug 11, 2023

The Leonard Messel Magnolia is a nice tree. Delivery through UPS was MORE than disappointing. I needed the plant on a Tuesday for a funeral tribute. I was emailed and informed it would be delivered the previous Friday. It was delayed until Saturday. I waited for it during 2 separate promised delivery periods on Saturday. It was delayed until Sunday, then quickly delayed until Monday. I contacted a person at UPS on Sunday and let her know I absolutely had to have it on Monday. Monday afternoon arrived again and I waited. I then received a message saying it would be delayed until Tuesday. Since that was too late for our gathering, I called UPS and they said they would make an “exception”, and “allow” me to pick it up at their shipping facility. I drove to get it and as it was being loaded into my SUV, an employee walked behind me and said “now that’s service!” No, not at all. Lesson learned ~ do NOT trust or use UPS. They should pay me for the “exception” I made by driving to pick it up.
