The Liatris Kobold boasts showy summertime blooms and thrives with a certain degree of neglect, making it an excellent plant for busy or forgetful gardeners. Fluffy, lavender-colored flowers bloom on top of tall spikes while the bottom portion of each stem is evenly covered in thin green foliage. This upright thriller is also known as Liatris spicata, dense blazing star, or prairie gayfeather.

Add height and texture to a garden bed with the Liatris Kobold. This plant is both heat and drought tolerant, allowing it to thrive in somewhat challenging conditions. The showy blooms attract butterflies and other pollinators, but the foliage and flowers are deer-resistant. This plant is native to North America, where it can be found naturally in prairies and sedge meadows. It grows as a perennial in USDA zones 3 through 9.

Liatris Kobold Care

Plant in full sun. Routinely water during the first growing season, but established plants seldom need water. Give the plant a drink during a heatwave and always apply water to the soil near the base of the plant to reduce the risk of fungal infections on the foliage. This plant is tolerant to most soil types as long as it promotes drainage. Ideally, the soil will have a slightly acid to neutral pH.

Liatris Kobold is not a heavy feeder, and topdressing the soil with organic compost or manure in the spring is typically enough to sustain the plant throughout the growing season. Apply fertilizer once in the spring as soon as new growth appears.

Liatris Kobold Spacing

Liatris spicata will grow 18 to 24 inches tall and just as wide. Plants can be spaced 18 to 24 inches center to center for continuous mass plantings. Leave more space if planting near a building.
