Blue leaves with yellow margins, fading to creamy white, what’s not to love! Large heart shaped leaves with a beautiful feather pattern in blue, this lovely medium size hosta will be a showstopper in your part to full shade garden this spring. If you have never grown hosta before, you are in for a treat as they are hardy, healthy easy to grow foliage plants that surprise you in mid summer by shooting up a flower scape, sometimes up to 40 inches tall, as in the case of Liberty Hosta. All that color and you get flowers too! Hosta do well in urban development areas, taking the city scene in stride as well as fitting into any garden bed or landscape border.

Hosta are native to northeast Asia and far east Russia. They are hardy plants, taking subzero temperatures in stride right along with hot humid summer temperatures and still looking great. Hardy in Zones 4 to 9, Liberty Hosta will perform for you in your part to full shade garden. Northern gardeners can plant in light shade with some sun, Southern gardeners will want to plant in full shade if possible to avoid the afternoon sun scalding the leaves.

Liberty Hosta Care

Easy to care for, hosta will appreciate a few growing conditions from you, like an average to fertile garden soil, amended with well composted organic material, a mulch to help keep weeds down and prevent frost heaving in the winter, and a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH of 5.8 to 6.5. If you use well composted leaves, your pH levels should be right where they thrive best. Well draining consistently moist soil is preferred, in fact, hosta won’t tolerate a soggy soil. Fertilizing should not be necessary if you provide a light top application of the well composted organic material for them once or twice in the growing season. Water to help maintain the soil moisture and the mulch will help it to retain the moisture. Plant in the shade, and water in the morning, giving the plant the entire day to dry off before nightfall to help in prevention of any plant diseases.

Deadheading of the flowers that arrive in midsummer may prolong the bloom time and keep your plant focused on flower production and away from seed production. Hosta will spread via their roots, and will need to be divided every 3 to 4 years to keep from getting over crowded. You can also divide the plants in late fall and bring some in to be potted as houseplants. Liberty Hosta makes an especially lovely houseplant. Water and feed potted plants regularly for best results.

Liberty Hosta Spacing

Space your plants up to 40 inches apart. This will give them room to spread out and good air circulation so that they dry out quickly from rainfall or overhead watering. Growing to about 26 inches tall and spreading out to 39 inches wide, this medium size mounding hosta will need all the room you can give it. Again, mulch to maintain moisture and prevent weeds. A good quality pine mulch will work fine. If you want to brighten up your shady area with an easy to care for perennial, look no further than the feathery blue color of Liberty Hosta for your spring garden!
