Late in the summer when other perennials are starting to look a little exhausted, this lovely Coreopsis will still be going great guns. Enchanted Eve Tickseed is part of the Lil’Bang™ series of Coreopsis. They have a nice bushy and compact shape while still producing masses of bright and cheerful butter yellow blossoms with a red eye. This is one small but powerful plant. Massed at the front of a sunny garden border or used to frame the edges of a bed or pathway. The flowers also are good for cutting and arranging.
Coreopsis are drought resistant plants that have a long bloom time. They are also low maintenance and easy to care for. The naturally mounded shape of Tickseed means no staking to keep the plant upright. Coreopsis is a native of North America and looks at home in everything from a meadow planting to a cottage garden to a container garden on a deck.
Li'l Bang™ Enchanted Eve Tickseed Care
Tickseed thrives in light soil that is on the sandy side. Clay soil does not drain enough for them. The pH should be neutral around 6.5-7.5. Watering is only an issue the first season while the plant establishes a good root system. Coreopsis generally will not need much extra irrigation, except during hot spells in the summer. Fertilizing is best done when new growth emerges in the late spring. A slow release, well balanced fertilizer is all that is needed to keep the flower buds producing.
Regular deadheading of spent flowers will keep Enchanted Eve looking tidy and producing flowers through to the first hard freeze. Coreopsis is good for a wide range of hardiness zones, from 5-8. In the warmer zone of 8 this plant may start to behave like a woody shrub. It is best cut back after the first hard frost to keep producing new green growth. The woody stems will produce less flowers and make the plant susceptible to damage if the winter is particularly harsh for the zone. In the lower zones it is always best to cut the old growth down in the fall and apply a thick mulch of leaves for insulation through snowy winters.
Li'l Bang™ Enchanted Eve Tickseed Spacing
The Lil’Bang™ series of Coreopsis is grown to be a bit shorter and denser than native varieties. Enchanted Eve has an overall height of 8-12 inches and a spread of 18-20 inches. These plants should be spaced 16-24 inches apart on the center of the plants.
