Forming small globes of evergreen foliage, the Little Giant Arborvitae is ideal for smaller spaces or for defining larger areas. Thuja occidentalis 'Little Giant', as it is botanically known, grows to around 3 to 4 feet and holds its rich green color well throughout the winter. Furthermore, it develops its appealing round shape naturally and requires little pruning to keep it so.
Being compact and slow growing, the Little Giant Arborvitae will not outgrow its allotted space and can even be grown in a large container. It is suitable for growing in zones 3 to 8 and perfect for framing an entrance or enhancing a foundation planting. This evergreen is native to parts of the Northeastern US and is salt tolerant.
Little Giant Arborvitae Care
The Little Giant Arborvitae grows best in full sun but can also tolerate a little shade. It is not fussy about the pH of the soil but prefers a fertile and well-drained substrate. It requires frequent irrigation until established and can cope with damp soils as well. An evergreen fertilizer applied in early spring will help encourage new lush growth.
One of the advantages of the Little Giant Arborvitae is that it effortlessly produces its pleasing form. However, you can lightly trim it in spring as needed to keep it looking tidy. An annual mulch of organic matter will help reduce moisture loss during the summer months.
Little Giant Arborvitae Spacing
The mature height and spread of this Little Giant Arborvitae is around 3 to 4 feet. Plant each around 3 to 4 feet apart for a defined shape, or closer for a knitted appearance.
