Little Henry Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia subtomentosa ‘Little Henry’) brings a dash of charm with its pinwheel-like yellow petals circling deep red-brown centers. Growing around 3-4 feet tall, its showy display lasts from midsummer into fall, creating cheery color in sunny borders. Sturdy stems keep the eye-catching blooms upright, while the dark green foliage adds a lively backdrop. This plant’s deer resistance and easygoing nature make it a delightful addition to mixed plantings.
Despite its compact habit, Little Henry’s bright quilled flowers maintain a bold presence. Native to parts of North America, it adapts well to a range of soil types and thrives on minimal care. Its upright habit fits perfectly in gardens that need a pop of long-lasting color, or where pollinators are welcome visitors. Use it for mass plantings, borders, or to fill meadows with warm hues all season long.
Little Henry Black-Eyed Susan Care
Provide a spot with six or more hours of direct sunlight each day, although partial shade is tolerated in hotter climates. Plant in moderately fertile, well-draining soil with dry to average moisture, adding compost if desired. Water consistently during the first growing season, then allow rainfall to handle most of the maintenance. A balanced fertilizer in spring can boost growth and extend the bloom show.
Deadheading spent blooms encourages more buds and helps the plant stay tidy. When grown in containers, choose a pot with good drainage and water slightly more often, especially during hot spells. In regions with freezing winters, add a protective layer of mulch to insulate the roots and cut back the stems once they’ve browned. Based on our experience, this perennial returns year after year with very little fuss.
Little Henry Black-Eyed Susan Spacing
Space each plant about two feet apart when creating a row or filling an area for a fuller appearance. If container-grown, select a pot around 12 inches wide to comfortably accommodate the root system.
