The Little Spark® Spirea is a lovely plant that provides a big impact on a bed or outdoor space. Delicate flowers are tiny but grow in clusters creating bursts of pinkish-purple blooms. The flowers grow on tall stems and hover above the foliage. Trim the flowers back when they start to fade to encourage a second flush of flowers later in the summer. When the foliage first appears in the spring, it is orange in color. As the season progresses, the foliage turns yellow, and it will hold this vibrant hue even in the peak summer sunshine.
Plant Spirea in beds or borders. The vibrant color makes a lively addition to a mixed bed, while two blooming cycles ensure plenty of opportunities to enjoy the colorful flowers. This shrub is low maintenance and drought-tolerant. Deer do not prefer the striking foliage for added convenience. The Little Spark® Spirea grows as a perennial in USDA zones 3 through 8.
Little Spark® Spirea Care
This showstopper thrives in full sun, which will ensure the foliage puts on a spectacular display. Rich, well-drained soil that is neutral to slightly acidic will support healthy growth. Spirea needs consistent water for the first growing season. Established plants are drought-tolerant but still need water when the top layer of the soil is dry. This plant is not a heavy feeder, and one application of balanced fertilizer in the spring is enough to sustain Spirea.
Prune the plant in late winter or early spring. A light prune after the spring bloom will encourage more growth and another round of flowers.
Little Spark® Spirea Spacing
This charming upright perennial will grow 18 to 24 inches tall and 18 to 30 inches wide. Plants can be spaced 14 to 28 inches apart.
