Living Christmas Tree - Emerald Green Arborvitae Care
If you keep the plant indoors, it will still need sunlight to stay alive. Place the plant by a sunny window (south facing is best). If you plan on using the plant seasonally live a live Christmas tree, you can put the plant anywhere you would like. Water regularly, but make sure the soil is completely dried out before watering.
If you plan on growing this plant outdoors after you have it inside during the holidays, the plant will need at least 2 months of a cold period to prepare for spring. Put the plant outside but in a protected area. The more sunlight the location gets the better. However, in colder zones, like 4, 5, and 6, you will want to provide additional protection to the base/root system of the plant.
You will still need to water the plant like any other plant during the winter. Make sure the soil dries completely out before you water. It is easy to over-water during cold months, as the plants don't require as much moisture.
In the spring, you can plan the arborvitae in the ground, or transplant it to a larger container. A small amount of slow release fertilizer designed for shrubs would be helpful but not required.
