Lomandra Breeze™ is a dwarf mat rush that forms a clean, grass-like mound that stays green all year in mild climates. Lomandra longifolia 'LM300' grows about 3 feet tall and wide, with narrow arching blades that create a dense, fountain-shaped clump. Small yellow flower spikes appear in spring and may carry a light honey fragrance. We recommend it for customers who want the look of ornamental grass with better tolerance for heat, drought, coastal exposure, and mixed light.

This Australian mat rush is not a true grass, though it fills many of the same design roles in the landscape. Breeze™ Dwarf Mat Rush is evergreen where temperatures stay above about 10 degrees and has low water needs after establishment. It tolerates sun, part shade, humidity, salt spray, dry soil, deer browsing, and rabbits once settled into well-drained ground. Plant it as edging, a foundation accent, slope cover, low mass planting, poolside texture, dry border foliage, or a container specimen.

Lomandra Breeze™ Care

Plant Lomandra Breeze™ in full sun to partial sun, with some afternoon shade helpful in hot southern regions. It grows best in loose, well-drained soil and adapts to amended clay, loam, sand, and silt. Acidic to neutral soil is ideal, though it can tolerate slightly alkaline conditions when drainage is reliable.

Water deeply after planting, then water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry while roots establish. Mature plants tolerate moderate drought and need less frequent irrigation, though occasional deep watering keeps the clump fuller through long summer dry spells. Fertilizer needs are low, but a light spring application of slow-release plant food or compost can support fresh foliage in lean soil. Avoid heavy, constantly wet soil, especially in winter.

Rake out or prune away dead foliage in late winter or early spring before new growth expands. Older clumps can be cut back hard in early spring when they need renewal, then allowed to regrow from the base. In colder edge-of-range gardens, grow Lomandra Breeze™ in containers that can be moved to a protected spot before hard freezes.

Lomandra Breeze™ Spacing

Space Lomandra Breeze™ about 2.5 to 3 feet apart for edging, mass plantings, and low informal borders. Allow 4 to 5 feet between clumps when each plant should stand separately in a mixed bed. For containers, choose a pot at least 18 to 22 inches wide with drainage holes, and use a well-drained potting mix.

In sunny, low-water beds, combine Lomandra Breeze™ with hens & chicks and ice plants, which match its need for drainage while adding low succulent texture at the front. Include rosemary in coastal or dry borders with lean soil and sun. In part-shade plantings, nandina and creeping liriope also provide a neat evergreen look and add contrasting texture.
