The Lucky Charm Windflower is all about color and puts on a dazzling display throughout the summer. The name windflower refers to how the flowers gently nod in a breeze, but this plant is officially known as Anemone x hybrida. Dark pink flowers have a bold yellow eye and grow on dark purplish-black stems. The charming flowers of the Lucky Charm Windflower are certainly a draw of this plant, but so is the unique foliage. The leaves emerge as a dark violet hue and by summer, have turned green, although the underside remains a light violet for a sneaky pop of color.
Grow the Lucky Charm Windflower as a perennial in zones 5 through 9. Create an impressive mass planting by featuring several windflower plants, or scatter them throughout a mixed border to add bursts of color. While the Lucky Charm Windflower looks lovely in a bed or border, the blooms also make wonderful cut flowers.
Lucky Charm Windflower Care
Plant the Lucky Charm Windflower in full to partial shade. An area shaded by a building or tall trees is often a good location. Water during a dry spell, and these plants perform best with at least one inch of water per week. The soil should be rich, moist, and well drained. Soil with a slightly acidic pH supports continued growth. Fertilize the Lucky Charm Windflower in the fall to support spring growth.
Remove dead or damaged growth as it appears to keep the plants tidy. The growth can be cut back to ground level in the fall.
Lucky Charm Windflower Spacing
The Lucky Charm Windflower stands about 30 to 36 inches tall and spreads 18 to 20 inches. Space plants 18 inches apart, or give them more room, and the plants will fill in the area with time. Container-grown plants need a pot that measures at least 10 inches wide.
