The botanically named Leucanthemum 'Macaroon' produces flower power in spades. Better known as the Macaroon Shasta Daisy, it displays double rows of stunning white petals around a yellow center, which contrast strongly against its dark green foliage. This compact, mound-forming variety might be small but certainly doesn’t lack any visual impact. With its open flowers, it is loved by pollinators and a great source of cut flowers.
Shasta daisies have long been a firm favorite with gardeners and for good reason. Being perfectly matched to the front of a border or a container, this Macaroon Shasta Daisy is wonderfully versatile. It is suitable for growing in zones 5 to 9 and is thankfully deer resistant, making it perfect for rural landscaping. As a drought-tolerant perennial, this plant is easy to grow and care for.
Macaroon Shasta Daisy Care
For the best flowers, this Macaroon Shasta Daisy should be grown in full sun. A free-draining soil is key, as Shasta doesn’t tolerate overly wet soil. Unless grown in very poor soil, any extra fertilizing isn’t usually necessary and may actually inhibit flower production. Once established, watering is generally only required during hot and dry periods.
Deadheading this plant is not strictly required but can help neaten its appearance and promote future blooms. Once the foliage has died back after the first frost, its stems can be cut down to 2-3 inches above the soil. In colder areas, any container-grown plants can be placed under cover to ride out the worst of the weather and low temperatures.
Macaroon Shasta Daisy Spacing
In the right conditions, the Macaroon Shasta Daisy can reach 12-14 inches high by 18-24 inches wide. When planting en masse for maximum impact, ‘Macaroon’ can be spaced at a distance of around 18 to 24 inches.
