The Madame Emile Debatene Peony is low maintenance and provides a bright burst of color during the late spring. Large double pink blooms have ruffled petals, creating a striking display. The flowers grow on tall stems with narrow, glossy dark green leaves. The Paeonia latifolia is a herbaceous perennial, meaning the greenery will completely die back in the fall, but this stunner will come back each spring.
Peonies look lovely in a bed, especially when planted with spring-blooming bulbs. Use this mounded plant to create a charming mass planting or border. Trim the stems to feature the beautiful flowers in an arrangement. The large, showy blooms of the Madame Emile Debatene Peony can also serve as a specimen planting. Pollinators, like butterflies, are drawn to the flowers. Grow this plant as a perennial in USDA growing zones 3 through 8.
Madame Emile Debatene Peony Care
Peony plants like full sun, so plant in an area that receives at least 6 hours of light. The soil should be rich, moist, but well-draining and have a neutral pH. Water this Peony when the top few inches of the soil dry out. Apply water to the ground around the plant, keeping the flowers and greenery dry as much as possible. Give this beauty a boost by applying a 10-20-20 fertilizer each spring.
The large flowers may topple the stems, especially after rainfall, so be ready to stake the plant, so the flowers remain upright and easy to admire. Trim away spent flowers to maintain a clean appearance. The growth will die back after the frost, so trim back the dead greenery in the fall and cover the roots with mulch.
Madame Emile Debatene Peony Spacing
This upright, mounded perennial will grow 18 to 24 inches tall and 34 to 36 inches wide. Plant Madame Emile Debatene Peony plants 36 inches apart to allow airflow between plants.
