The Magical® Robin Weigela is an ideal shrub for adding a burst of color in early summer. Loved by hummingbirds, it produces cherry-red tubular blooms in May that almost smother its deep green leaves. Botanically known as Weigela florida Magical® Robin, this shrub is tough and easy to grow. As a compact variety, Magical® Robin will reach an eventual 4 feet all over.
Being tolerant to both deer and salt, this Weigela is particularly suitable for rural and coastal locations. With a small habit, it is ideal for smaller gaps in the border and being a reblooming cultivar, will keep looking good all summer long. It is frost tolerant and adaptable for growing in zones 5 to 8. Whether planted on its own as a specimen or in a group, Magical® Robin Weigela will not disappoint.
Magical® Robin Weigela Care
For the Magical® Robin Weigela to thrive, it should be grown in full sun. It can tolerate most soil types as long as they are kept moist but not soggy. To get the most from its wonderful red blooms, a general, slow-release fertilizer can be applied to the soil as the new growth appears in early spring. Weigela shrubs require regular watering until they have established a solid root system. However, don’t be tempted to overwater as this can lead to root rot.
Once the flowers have faded in early summer, this shrub can be pruned by removing about one-third of the flowering stems. It is advisable not to prune later in the year as this can result in losing the following year’s blooms.
Magical® Robin Weigela Spacing
Over time, the Magical® Robin Weigela can grow to 3-4 feet tall and wide. When grown en masse, this shrub can be planted with a spacing of 2-3 feet between plants.
