Offer backyard wildlife food and shelter and your human visitors plenty of color to enjoy with the Magical Universe St. John’s Wort (Hypericum inodorum Magical Universe ‘Kolmuni’). This easy-care shrub produces bluish-green foliage that serves as a backdrop for bright yellow flowers in late spring and early summer. Deep red-mahogany fruit follows the flowers, staying on from June until frost or until the birds have eaten them all up. Grow this rust-resistant St. John’s wort in zones 5 through 8.
St. John’s Wort also is known as a healthy plant for people. Leaves, flowers, and seeds can be brewed to make tea that is touted as helpful for depression or trouble sleeping. Regardless of its health benefits, this is a stunning shrub that grows to nearly 3 feet high and wide. The compact, dense habit ensures plenty of foliage to create borders and low hedges by planting a row or group of the shrubs together.
Magical Universe St. John’s Wort Care
Plant the Magical Universe in spring or early summer. Choose a sunny location, one that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. The shrub can handle most soil types, but prefers spots in which the soil drains well, especially in areas with typically wet winters. Mulch around the plant to help keep soil moist (but not soggy) and cut down on weeds. Water deeply during the first growing season to help the roots grow and then weekly from then on.
In fall, leave berries on the plant for birds and wait until late winter or early spring to prune the shrub just before new growth occurs. St. John’s wort does not require heavy pruning. Simply remove any dead or damaged branches and shape the plant as desired. Add a layer of compost in spring to help nourish the soil and fertilize the shrub during the summer according to package directions. Avoid over-fertilizing.
Magical Universe St. John’s Wort Spacing
Although this shrub resists rust, it needs some room to breathe. Generally space plants about 3 feet apart, center on center. And a little closer to create a low border.
