Maires Heather is an alluring blooming perennial that is low-maintenance and can serve a variety of uses in a landscape. New growth is pale green before settling into a deeper green hue once mature. Tall branched stems are covered with compactly and evenly spaced bell-shaped flowers. The white flowers of the Calluna vulgaris bloom during the summer.

As a mat-forming groundcover, this shrub is full and dense. Plant in a sun-soaked area, especially on an embankment or a slope, and this beauty will thrive. The stems will grow up to 36 inches tall, making this plant a wonderful low hedge, border, or foundation planting. The stems add height to a bed or mass planting. Grow Maires Heather as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 8.

Maires Heather Care

Moist, acidic, well-drained soil is necessary to support this plant. Grow the Maires Heather in full sun to partial shade. Heather needs about one inch of water per week. Soil should remain consistently moist, but allow it to mostly dry out before watering. An acidic fertilizer applied during the spring will promote new growth.

Pinch back new growth to encourage branching. This plant is naturally very dense but periodically remove dead or old growth to promote new growth. Cut back no more than one-third of the plant once per year.

Maires Heather Spacing

As an upright spreading plant, Maires Heather will grow 24 to 36 inches tall and wide. Space Heather plants 22 to 38 inches apart.
