Much loved for its autumnal color, the Mapleleaf Viburnum is a superb shrub for partial or dappled shade. The Viburnum acerifolium, as it is botanically named, is a deciduous shrub that produces maple-like leaves that change from green to purplish red in the fall. In late spring, it develops tiny white clusters of flowers that are adored by pollinators and are a key source of wild nectar, before turning into fruit for the birds.
The Mapleleaf Viburnum is native to North American woodlands and is a magnet for all sorts of wildlife. It is smaller than some other viburnums, but produces suckers and naturalizes readily in the right conditions. Growing to around 6 feet tall, it is ideal for the back of a border or mixed hedge.
Mapleleaf Viburnum Care
Although able to cope with a range of soils, the Mapleleaf Viburnum is happiest when grown in well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. Naturally preferring woodland cover, this shrub seems to thrive when grown in partial or dappled shade. Regular watering is necessary for the first few years as its roots establish. Extra fertilization is not generally required.
Pruning this shrub is not strictly required. However, the size can be reduced in late winter if desired. To conserve moisture and to suppress any weeds, a layer of organic mulch can be applied in spring.
Mapleleaf Viburnum Spacing
Mapleleaf Viburnum can reach an eventual size of around 6-7 feet tall by 4-5 feet wide. When planting this shrub in a group, use a distance of 4 feet between plants.
