Growing Zones
Marmalade Potentilla is the cutest and also the toughest ground cover around. The super compact size is covered in semi-double blooms from early summer all of the way until the first freeze. The small, dark foliage is the perfect backdrop to the juicy orange marmalade blooms. Marmalade Potentilla is lovely used as an edging plant for a garden bed or planted at the top of a retaining wall where it can drape over and soften the look.
Potentilla fruticosa ‘Marmalade’ is extremely cold tolerant and deciduous. The finely shaped foliage is deer and disease resistant. Native bees and other beneficial pollinators will visit Potentilla all season long.
Marmalade Potentilla Care
Potentilla thrive on very poor soil. They are great for use in the hottest and driest parts of the garden. Full sun will ensure that it blooms all summer. Extra irrigation will be needed until this shrub is fully established and also during periods of extended drought. Fertilizing is needed only once a season as the new growth emerges early in the spring. A well balanced, slow release fertilizer is recommended. Mulching Potentillas in the coldest of the hardiness zones will help ensure that it survives the winter.
Pruning is not needed with this little gem. When shaping is desired, the best time to prune ia at the beginning of the spring when the new growth is emerging. Marmalade Potentilla will tolerate salt spray and heavy winds, making it a must for seaside garden plantings.
Marmalade Potentilla Spacing
Marmalade has a height of 2-3 feet and a width of 2-3 feet. This shrub should be planted 24 inches- 30 inches, center on center. Marmalade can also be used as a filler plant in mixed containers to give seasonal interest.
