Masses of exceptionally dark maroon flowers and a compact form make the Maroon Swoon Weigela an excellent shrub for landscapes or patios with limited space. The fragrant flowers appear in late spring and again in autumn and attract hummingbirds and butterflies. They are reliable performers, with few maintenance requirements and minimal pest issues. This hardy little shrub also features rich, deep green foliage that complement the trumpet-shaped blooms when used in cut flower bouquets.
The compact, tidy nature of the Maroon Swoon Weigela makes it versatile in the landscape. It grows only 4 to 5 feet high and 3 to 4 feet wide and maintains a mounded shape. Several together work well as an informal flowering hedge or border. Scattered throughout a bed, they provide beautiful bursts of color. Additionally, this weigela is a great option for containers, foundation plantings, and cut-flower gardens.
Maroon Swoon Weigela Care
Maroon Swoon weigela need at least 4 hours of direct sunlight daily but produce the best form and flowers in a site with full sun. They prefer well-drained soil and have average water requirements. Water once or twice per week when soil is dry during the season after planting and whenever there is an extended dry spell afterwards. Plants kept in containers will require watering whenever soil an inch below the surface feels dry. An annual slow-release fertilizer application around the base of the plant in early spring is enough to keep this weigela happy.
Prune weigelas in late winter or early spring, but wait until after the first round of flowering to shorten the plant by removing top growth, as blooms appear on the previous year’s growth. The shrub benefits from a rejuvenation pruning every few years. To do this, cut the oldest, biggest stems down to ground level in late winter.
Maroon Swoon Weigela Spacing
To create an informal low hedge or border, plant these weigelas 2½ feet apart. They also provide an excellent splash of color scattered throughout a mixed bed or along a foundation.
