Gardeners looking for understated elegance and a laid-back, tropical vibe will want to plant Marshmallow Moon HIbiscus. This pure white hardy Hibiscus has it all. Deep green foliage offsets extra large, long-lasting flowers; its naturally compact shape is perfect for smaller gardens or containers. Marshmallow Moon has some of the largest flowers in the Hibiscus family, making it a dramatic showstopper for late summer color in the perennial garden.
Marshmallow Moon has sturdy flowers that last longer and are better at resisting rain than other varieties of Hibiscus. Pest and diseases are not an issue and deer browsing rarely causes long-term problems. Pollinators like native bees and hummingbirds adore the wide open and flat flowers of Hibiscus, making this shrub a great ornamental addition to the edges of a kitchen garden or a pollinator garden design.
Marshmallow Moon Hibiscus Care
This perennial Hibiscus requires well-draining soil and full sun exposure for vigorous and healthy growth. Acidic to neutral soil is essential for deep foliage color and trouble-free growth. You can use this perennial in the outer edges of a rain garden plan, or grow it in sandy and slightly stoney soils. Water it for the first season or two to promote a strong root system that can tolerate brief dry spells. Mulch with organic material to aid weed suppression during the growing season and to increase moisture retention of the soil.
Pinch new growth in the late spring to encourage dense branching and more flower buds. Regularly deadhead Marshmallow Moon to keep the plant tidy and continually producing flowers long into the fall. When the shrub goes dormant in late fall, hold off on cutting back the spent growth until spring. The spent top growth not only protects the crown from excess snow and moisture, but helps to mark the location of the plant until new growth materializes.
Perennial Hibiscus is slow to start growing in the spring and may be the last of your perennials to appear. Be patient and make sure to remove any mulch over the crown when the weather warms.
Marshmallow Moon Hibiscus Spacing
Marshmallow Moon is a compact perennial Hibiscus that tops out at 3-4 feet tall and wide. Allow plenty of room between plants when planting in a garden bed. Space the plants 4 feet apart from each center. The extra space not only allows for good circulation around each plant, but the large, billowy flowers will be visible on all sides. Marshmallow Moon is perfect for planting in large containers with at least a 5-gallon capacity or 16-inch diameter.
