If you’re looking for a plant to add the wow factor into your garden when your perennial flowers are beginning to fade, Marvel Mahonia is the plant for you. This upright evergreen shrub produces large bright yellow colored candle-like clusters of wonderfully fragrant flowers at the top of the branches in late autumn or early winter. The large dark frond-like green leaves that cover the horizontally layered branches will also add year-round texture and color to your landscape.
Marvel Mahonia can be grown in USDA hardiness zones 6 to 9 in part sun to shade conditions with some protection from strong winds. Full-grown, this plant will be approximately 6 feet tall and 4 feet wide. The flowers of Mahonia x media 'Marvel' mature to grape-like clusters of waxy bluish-purple berries during the late summer months that are enjoyed by songbirds.
Marvel Mahonia Care
A single specimen will produce some fruit, but growing multiple plants is best to take advantage of cross-pollination. Once established, these drought-tolerant plants require very little care or maintenance. Fertilize in early spring or summer if desired. This strikingly attractive plants can be used in flowering shrub borders, containers, home foundation plantings, hedges, wildlife gardens, woodland borders and mass planting. Marvel Mahonia are deer, disease, heat, drought and insect resistant.
Pruning Marvel Mahonia should be done after the plant is finished blooming in late winter or early spring. Never cut back the branches by more than a third of the total length. Pruning is not necessary, but can be done to help the foliage be more dense, or help rejuvenate the plant. You may trim dead or sick branches at anytime of the year to help encourage healthy growth of the plant and to help the appearance when needed.
Marvel Mahonia Spacing
Space individual plants 3 to 3.5 feet apart in mass plantings and natural-looking hedges or at least 5 feet apart if you want space between them. It can be grown as a container plant and brought indoors in zones colder than zone 6.
