Verbenas are native to North America, so they perform well without much help from gardeners, and the hybrid Verbena Meteor Shower (V. bonariensis) really wows. The drought-tolerant plant blooms nonstop in summer with clusters of delicate lilac-colored blooms that last for days. The flowers rise above dark green, slender foliage, packing plenty of interest in a summer annual to adorn a patio, deck or garden beds.
Verbena Meteor Shower is more compact than some verbena hybrids, reaching no more than 30 inches tall and 8 to 12 inches around. The little but upright plant suits nearly any container or landscape use, filling pots with plenty of purple color or bordering walkways and bringing butterflies and hummingbirds into the yard. The plant attracts these pollinators but is deer resistant, adding to its landscaping versatility.
Meteor Shower Verbena Care
Plant your verbena in average soil and ensure containers have drainage. Water it regularly, but avoid over-watering the plant, which can survive periods of drought. There is no need to prune or deadhead verbena. The flowers set very few seeds, so it focuses more attention on flowering and there are few worries about Meteor Shower spreading in the garden.
Although it needs no regular fertilizing, you can add compost to the planting area, or fertilize once or twice in summer with a slow-release fertilizer to keep the plant fed. This is more true of container-grown verbenas. This plant is an easy-care annual in most gardening zones and situations.
Meteor Shower Verbena Spacing
Create a carpet of light purple flowers for butterflies to land on and hummingbirds to enjoy by placing many Verbena Meteor Shower plants together. Space the plants about 8 to 12 inches apart.
