For a stunning and fragrant lilac, look no further than this Michel Buchner Lilac. A large and upright Syringa vulgaris, ‘Michel Buchner' is easy to grow and can reach 10 feet high. However, the highlight has to be its large rose-lilac double flowers, which are heavenly scented. Blooming from April through May, the flowers of Michel Buchner Lilac are so fragrant you will want to cut some for a vase.

Even though deciduous, the Michel Buchner Lilac can be used to form a fine hedge of lush green foliage during the growing season. It is also ideal for growing as a specimen shrub at the back of a border. With its origins in Eastern Europe, this lilac is a reliable bloomer and ideal for growing in zones 3 to 9.

Michel Buchner Lilac Care

For the best display of its magnificent blooms, you will want to plant Michel Buchner Lilac where it will get full sun. It can cope with some partial shade, but potentially at the expense of some flowers. Suitable for planting in the spring or fall, lilacs prefer well-drained, fertile soil. Water thoroughly upon planting and afterward until establishment. Water at the base of the plant only, and avoid wetting the leaves. To encourage a profusion of blooms, you can apply a light application of a balanced fertilizer in early spring.

To avoid removing the flowering buds for the following year, any pruning should be performed immediately after flowering. To promote good airflow and reduce the chance of mildew, you can prune out one-third of the oldest stems to the ground.

Michel Buchner Lilac Spacing

When fully grown, the Michel Buchner Lilac can reach a size of 8 to 10 feet high and 6 to 8 feet wide. If growing to form a fragrant hedge, you can space each lilac around 6 to 8 feet apart.
