Midnight Cascade Blueberry is perfect for even the smallest gardens because it can be grown in a hanging basket. That’s right, this vaccinium corumbosyn Midnight Cascade has a natural trailing habit that makes it perfect for a hanging basket or as an unusual and edible groundcover in the kitchen garden. This variety of blueberry also requires only 19 days of winter temperatures below 45 degrees F, making this the best producer for warmer states. The spring flowers and fiery foliage color in the fall make this plant a must-have for year-round interest.
Midnight Cascade Blueberry Care
Blueberries produce the most fruit when grown in full sun, although shade early or late in the day is acceptable. Use a soil-based potting mix for growing Midnight Cascade in containers and add a granular, slow-release fertilizer for acid-loving plants. A hanging basket or other container will need excellent drainage to protect the roots from root rot. One plant will fill a 12-inch diameter container perfectly. Midnight Cascade is a perennial shrub that may need to be placed in a frost-free location over the winter in the colder growing zones.
Growing Midnight Cascade Blueberry
Midnight Cascade will produce fruit from the first year after planting and is a self-pollinating variety. Growing other Midnight Cascade plants or High Bush Blueberries will encourage heavier cropping. The mature height and spread are 18-24 inches, and one plant will fill a 12-inch hanging basket in one season. Space plants at least 18 inches apart when planting in a garden bed.
Midnight Cascade Blueberry can be pruned to keep its shape after harvesting in late summer. Light clipping of the branch ends will encourage dense growth. Blueberries may require root pruning and repotting with fresh potting mix after 3-4 years of container growing, spurring vigorous new top growth and heavier flower production in the spring.
Watering Midnight Cascade Blueberry
Blueberries prefer well-drained soil that holds moisture. The potting mix should feel like a wrung-out sponge. Water containers when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry. Daily watering may be required during hot and dry weather.
Feeding Midnight Cascade Blueberry
Choose a liquid fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants. Apply a diluted feed once a month until fruit forms. Alternatively, apply a granular, slow-release fertilizer in the spring and reapply yearly.
