Midnight Ruby Rhododendron

The Midnight Ruby Rhododendron is a must-add perennial to your landscape. The blooms are the most special part of the plant, bright light pink, and different from typical rhododendrons that emerge in spring. This rhododendron almost implies more bloom than foliage, as it’s that efficiently productive. Green foliage turns dark in the autumn on this evergreen perennial. 

This perennial is hardy in zones four through eight. This plant is vulnerable to deer, but will be a welcome addition to your landscape for pollinators. This rhododendron will grow in size every year, so it isn’t necessarily appropriate for use in containers. However, it would do wonderfully in borders, or along fencing provided there’s enough room. 

Midnight Ruby Rhododendron Care

This hardy perennial shrub will survive in full sun and partial sun. It welcomes moist, well drained soil. It would be beneficial to supplementally water after a few days of no rain. It’s not necessary to fertilize, but a layer of compost or mulch can be added each spring to reintroduce some nutrients. 

Pruning is not necessary with the Midnight Ruby Rhododendron. It’s also not necessary to deadhead spent blooms, as this plant blooms once in the late Spring, before returning to a majority foliage display. 

Midnight Ruby Rhododendron Spacing

This perennial works wonderfully as a border plant. It has the potential to reach two to three feet high. It grows consistently throughout its lifetime, so space it at least two to three feet apart from other plants, or rhododendrons.
