A powerful punch of color and texture in one miniature package, Mighty Mouse Hosta will wow you with its blue green leaves with yellow margins that fade to a grey green with creamy white margins as summer wears on. Sporting a beautiful multi bloom 12 inch lavender flower scape in midsummer, this variegated hosta will hold its own amongst larger hosta in your full to part shade garden this spring. Good things come in small packages, right?
Native to Northeast Asia and parts of Russia, this hardy small hosta can take the weather in all climates and bring you big results! Subzero temperatures won’t bother it, nor will the heat of summer months in the hottest regions. This is a truly all-around foliage plant that adapts in any habitat you can place it in. It looks great as an understory plant to a larger shade loving perennial shrub, especially when you plant multiples of the same plant to provide an even bigger punch of that variegated leaf color. Slugs love hostas, but this little beauty has tough leaves and resists any damage from them. They are hardy in Zones 4 to 9.
Mighty Mouse Hosta Care
Hosta are notoriously easy to care for, requiring only some shade and well draining humus rich consistently moist soil which is easily provided by adding well composted organic material to your native soil and mulching with a good quality pine mulch. Preferring to have a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH, with a range of 5.8 to 6.5, it is easy to approximate this with some well rotted leaf mulch worked into your soil. Water in the morning so that the plant has time to dry off by nightfall and plant in an area that is protected from strong wind to help prevent any foliage damage. You will not have to fertilize your hosta if you use the organic material to dress the top of the soil once or twice in the growing season. Northern gardeners can plant in light shade with some sun, Southern gardeners are going to want to plant in a location that provides deep shade to protect from the scalding sun.
Deadheading of the flowers once they have wilted may prolong the bloom season. Just remove the stem down to the foliage and new stems will grow in their place. This is a slower growing hosta that won’t easily exceed its bounds or become overcrowded, but consider dividing it every 4 to 5 years if it does get too crowded. They make lovely houseplants if you divide them in the fall and bring one indoors to enjoy over the winter. Mulch your plant with a good quality mulch in the late fall to protect from winter frost heaving.
Mighty Mouse Hosta Spacing
Space your plants about 12 inches apart. Mulch to prevent weeds and to help retain soil moisture. Liberty Hosta will grow just 8 inches tall and spread out about 12 inches and looks great when planted in multiples to show off that gorgeous blue green color and lavender flowers. You are going to want several of these lovely little perennials in your garden this spring!
