Delphiniums are early summer garden showstoppers, with tall flower spikes that attract pollinators and other beneficial insects in droves. Million Dollar Blue Bee has an electric blue hue that is uniform throughout the semi-double blooms. The Million Dollar series of Delphinium has been bred to be more heat tolerant with exceptionally sturdy flower stems, which are less prone to bending and breaking without added support.
Delphinium elatum is sure to please any gardener seeking flowers for the garden and fresh-cut stems for the vase. The true blue color makes it stand out in the cottage garden or in a mixed container planting as the ‘thriller’. The finely dissected and deep green leaves remain fresh all summer with little maintenance. Delphiniums are deer and rabbit resistant even in areas with high populations. The truly compact size of the Million Dollar series requires little staking of the large flower spikes.
Million Dollar Blue Bee Delphinium Care
Delphiniums like well-drained soil that is also rich and moisture retentive. Neutral to alkaline soil is the perfect pH, and they will benefit from a yearly application of organic compost to the root zone. Plant Million Dollar Blue Bee in full sun to get the biggest and most colorful blooms.
Deadheading Delphiniums will encourage more flowers. Cutting back the plants by half after the first flush of flowers will also encourage bushier growth and another display of flowers early in the fall. Delphiniums are herbaceous perennials that will lose all top growth after the first frost in fall. The leaves and stems can be left to insulate the crown over the winter and removed in early spring when new green shoots emerge.
Million Dollar Blue Bee Delphinium Spacing
Million Dollar Blue Bee has a nice compact and sturdy shape that matures to 30-36 inches tall and 12-24 inches wide. Space plants 18 inches apart on center when planting multiples. Container-grown Delphinium will require a pot diameter of at least 10 inches.
