Growing Zones
Mini Gallery Red Lupine (Lupinus polphyllus) paints your landscape raspberry red in late spring and summer with stunning flower spikes that rise above pretty green foliage. This lupine loves sun but can handle part shade, especially in the hotter regions of zones 4 through 8. Lupines are native to North America, so the flower spikes attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds to hillsides — or to your garden. The plant grows to only about 15 inches tall and 9 inches around and fills with red flower spikes above the leaves.
Lupines are easy-care perennial plants, and Mini Gallery Red Lupine boasts blooming benefits that far outweigh plant maintenance. That's one reason why they make such gorgeous mass plantings — filling a garden bed or flowing down a sunny hillside as they do in nature. Placing a few of these red lupines in a container can add a burst of color to any arrangement. The lupine is salt tolerant as well, making it a great plant for coastal meadows or as a border near an urban sidewalk or driveway.
Mini Gallery Red Lupine Care
Plant Mini Gallery Red Lupine in an area that gets full sun or mostly sun. If you live in hotter areas of the plant's growing range, give the flower some afternoon shade if possible. Choose neutral or slightly acidic soil that drains well. Lupines need about 1 inch of water a week and might need more in times of peak heat and drought. Keeping their roots cool also helps them stay healthy. Just add a layer of mulch around the base of the plant. Remove mostly faded flower spikes for a possible second bloom.
Mini Gallery Red Lupine Spacing
For early raspberry red color in your landscape, plant a mass or border of Mini Gallery Red Lupines. Place the plants 7 to 9 inches apart from center to center and watch them fill in.
