Delphiniums give a traditional and romantic feeling to any garden. Their tall flower spikes are great for the back of a perennial border or tucked away in a quiet corner of a cottage garden and last for days as cut flowers in a vase. Older varieties require staking; however, Mini Stars Hybrid Bee has compact growth and requires little, if any staking of the flowers. The soft blues and pink flower spikes can withstand heavy winds and heavy rains without extra support.
Mini Stars Hybrid Bee delphinium is a must for the smaller garden where it looks stunning in the middle or front layer of a garden border. Mini Stars is also perfect for large or small containers and looks great as the thriller in a mixed summer arrangement. Delphinium might seem like a deer favorite; however, this is one plant that deer don’t even give a second glance to.
Mini Stars Hybrid Bee Delphinium Care
Plant Minis Stars in well-draining soil enriched with plenty of organic material to aid in moisture retention and fertility. Delphinium will thrive in partial shade to full sun; just give them shelter during the hottest part of the day. Consistent watering is needed throughout the growing season since delphinium does not tolerate periods of drought well. Fertilize early in the spring as the new season's growth emerges with an all-purpose formula with a balanced NPK ratio of 5-5-5. Slow-release or extended-release fertilizers are the easiest to use and will support growth for up to three months per application.
Deadhead delphiniums as the flower spikes die back to encourage ongoing blooming. Alternatively, the whole plant can be cut back hard by halp in mid-summer to encourage new foliage and another flush of blooms late in the summer. This is a particularly helpful way to clean up damaged foliage if slugs and snails are a problem. In the fall, cut back plants to within 6 inches from the ground after they enter dormancy. This decreases the risks of overwintering pests and diseases.
Mini Stars Hybrid Bee Delphinium Spacing
The compact size and sturdy growth habit of Mini Stars delphiniums make them well suited for smaller gardens and containers. You can plant several of them close together to create large swaths of color. Space plants 12 inches apart when planting in groups. Mini Stars grows well in containers with other plants. Select pots at least 16 inches in diameter when planting more than one plant.
