Lilacs are the quintessential late spring flowering shrub. The scent of a lilac shrub gets more intense as the days warm and lengthen. Miss Kim Lilac is a tried and true Lilac that will fit in almost any size garden. The 3 inch long panicle of flowers is a beautiful pale lilac that stays true as the flowers age. The stems are long lived in a flower arrangement. The foliage is a deep, glossy green that has high resistance to mildew as well as turning brilliant shades of red in the fall.
Miss Kim Lilac is a deciduous shrub that performs as well in the heat of the South as it does in the North. Heat and humidity are not a problem like it is for other Lilac varieties. Miss Kim also blooms slightly later than most varieties, making it a great addition to already existing Lilac collections. Deer and rabbit resistant.
Miss Kim Lilac Care
Lilacs require full sun to bloom at their best. Alkaline to neutral soil is preferred. Well drained, moist soil is a necessity. Consistent watering the first 3-4 years will help Miss Kim establish well. Using drip irrigation or soaker hoses will help keep the foliage dry and free of mildew and fungal rust diseases.
Lilacs like to have rich, fertile soil to support massive blooming. Mulching with organic compost annually in the early spring and fall will improve the soil fertility greatly. Applying a well balanced, slow release fertilizer early in the spring is also helpful if mulching is not possible. Pruning after the flowers stop blooming is key to encouraging new blooms in the next year. Lilac can handle a hard cutting back from between half its size to one third if needed.
Miss Kim Lilac Spacing
The mature height of Miss Kim is 6-7 feet with a width of 5-6 feet. Spacing is important when first planting Lilacs. They do not like to be moved after establishing in one area. Plant multiple shrubs at 5 feet on center to ensure proper air circulation and room for future growth.
