Miss Pearl Butterfly Bush is non-invasive and smaller in size than many other butterfly bush varieties. This fast-growing deciduous shrub produces long-lasting, pure white honey-scented blossoms for months during the summer into fall without deadheading. This variety was bred by Dr. Dennis Werner at North Carolina State University. This shrub is sometimes referred to as summer lilac.
Miss Pearl Butterfly Bush is a great landscape choice for border gardens, screening utilities, privacy or unattractive views, in mass planting or as a focal point in your garden. It can also be grown as a container plant. The long, narrow clusters of white blossoms formed at the tips of each stem are attractive to many species of butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. It’s also deer and rabbit resistant. This shrub can be grown in USDA hardiness zones 5 to 9 and will reach between 4 and 5 feet in height and width when mature.
Miss Pearl Butterfly Bush Care
Blossoms appear on new growth but prune in the spring after new leaf growth emerges for best results. Prune to just above the point where new growth begins. New spring growth takes place later than in most shrubs so don’t be concerned and tempted to remove the plan inadvertently thinking that it has not survived the winter. Plant Miss Pearl Butterfly Bush in a sunny location in well-draining soil. It is susceptible to root rot in wet winter and spring conditions.
Miss Pearl Butterfly Bush Spacing
Plant multiple specimens 4 to 5 feet apart on center. Avoid planting Miss Pearl Butterfly Bush in the fall in USDA hardiness zones 5 and 6. This is because the plant needs time to become established to survive harsh winter conditions.
