Mr. Lincoln is a Hybrid Tea Rose that reliably blooms all summer and still has the heady scent of the old-fashioned Damask Rose. The rich red petals are perfectly uniform and long lived on the bush or in a vase. The deep green foliage has excellent disease resistance. This Hybrid Tea is a true American variety bred in 1964 from ‘Chrysler Imperial’ and ‘Charles Mallerin’ and received the All-American Rose Selection award in 1965.
Mr. Lincoln stands tall and is perfect for the back of a mixed perennial border or part of a specialty rose garden. The deep red flowers look great planted opposite other hot and jewel-toned plants. Deer are known to like rosebuds as much as humans, and there may be some browsing early in the season. Mr. Lincoln generally can recover with bushy new growth and later blooming flowers. Shrub roses are hardy enough to survive winters in zones 5-8 with little extra maintenance. Any winter damage is easily pruned the following spring.
Mr. Lincoln Hybrid Tea Rose Care
Plant Mr. Lincoln in a sunny spot that has well-draining soil. Provide a granular rose fertilizer when planting and then mulch well around the root zone with 2-3 inches of organic compost to help the soil retain moisture. Drip irrigation or soaker hoses are the best way to water roses and avoid excess water on foliage. Dry foliage helps to keep black spot and other fungal diseases from spreading.
Pruning is much easier with shrub and Hybrid Tea Roses than most gardeners believe. In the early spring, prune out dead, diseased, or dying canes from the previous year. The remaining green, healthy canes can be cut back to half their height. Make each cut directly above a growth bud that faces outward. Cut back to the second or third set of leaves to keep the shrub's overall shape compact and tidy. Deadheading during the growing season can be done regularly and as can cutting flowers for arranging.
Mr. Lincoln Hybrid Tea Rose Spacing
The mature height for Mr Lincoln is 4-5 feet with a spread of 2-3 feet. Make sure to space plants far enough apart for proper air circulation if planting multiples; 30 inches on center should be adequate. Hybrid Tea Roses can also be grown in large containers with a diameter of 16 inches.
