  • Blooming hot pinks to dark reds!

Portulaca Mojave Red (Portulaca umbraticola) is wow, just wow! No need to watch a sunset when you can grow one in your own backyard. Just as the name suggests, this is a heat, humidity and drought tolerant annual growing well in zones 10-11. The hotter it gets the more Mojave red blooms and shines. This easy care, trailing plant is a great addition to the landscape and can be enjoyed in both containers and hanging baskets, as well. Blooming hot pinks to dark reds from late spring through first frost, this succulent is a showstopper.

Mojave red has a mounding, trailing form making it an excellent choice for containers as a spiller when planted at the edges of mixed pots. It’s trailing habit makes this plant a perfect selection for hanging baskets. In the landscape, utilize Mojave red as a ground cover, in mass plantings, for borders, in mixed containers and for hanging baskets. It is an excellent ground cover. Mojave is bee-friendly but also attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. It has no real disease or pest issues.

Mojave Red Purslane Care

Portulaca Mojave red is a no fuss, easy care, plant with little to no maintenance requirements. Mojave red does not require deadheading, but can benefit from a late summer pruning or trimming to encourage a new flush of blooms. Growing well in plant hardiness zones 9-11, Mojave red shines in full sun but does not perform well in poorly drained soils and will tolerate dry soils. Because Mojave red is a succulent, it is considered a low water use plant. Growing up to 4 – 8 inches in height and trailing up to 16 inches Mojave red can be used as a ground cover in the landscape. It is not fussy about soil type or pH and it is said to tolerate salty soils. A yearly application of fertilizer or compost on garden beds and regular liquid fertilizer of potted plants will keep plants looking great year-round. Do not need a lot of fertilizer to perform well.

Grown as an herbaceous annual in zones 9-11 Mojave red can live through mild winters and carry on with continuous blooms. Plants grown in containers should get full sun for best performance and for maximum bloom yields. Mojave red can be grown on patios and porches with six or more hours of sun, but will not do well indoors.

Mojave Red Purslane Spacing

Plant 8 – 10 inches apart in containers and hanging baskets. For garden beds and grown in mass, plants should be spaced approximately 10 - 12 inches apart. When grown in mass or used as a bedding plant, individual plants should be spaced approximately 14 inches apart.
