The large, vivid tangerine five-petaled flowers with bright yellow centers produced by Portulaca Mojave Tangerine (Portulaca umbraticola) will add a burst of sunshine to your gardens from late spring to frost. The flowers close at night and reopen in the morning. For best results, plant them in full sun conditions. This short plant will grow between 4 and 8 inches tall with a 12 to 16-inch spread in a trailing habit.
The drought, heat, humidity, and salt tolerance qualities of Portulaca Mojave Tangerine make it an award winner in the top performer category. This plant can be used in pots, window boxes, hanging baskets, mass plantings, and as a ground cover. It performs in the spiller role in container gardens and will trail up to 16 inches. Both bees and butterflies will be attracted to the flowers.
Mojave Tangerine Purslane Care
This plant will tolerate dry conditions but will perform better in soils with an average moisture level. Portulaca Mojave Tangerine has low fertilizer needs. This plant is a wonderful choice for warm climates with poor, dry soils.
Deadheading is not required for this succulent to continuously bloom. This plant is typically grown as an annual but is hardy in zones 10 to 11. It may survive indoors as a houseplant in full sun conditions.
Mojave Tangerine Purslane Spacing
In a garden bed, space plants 8 to 10 inches apart, center on center. They can be planted a minimum of 6 inches apart in a container to achieve a fuller look. They’ll look great combined with taller plants that produce similar or contrasting color flowers.
