Mentha x villosa is the true mint traditionally used for mojitos. The larger leaf and floral-fruity taste is more subtle than other mints and is perfect in all kinds of recipes, not just mojitos. Mint is easy to grow in a pot outdoors or inside on a bright windowsill. The tender, young leaves can be harvested all summer or easily frozen in ice cubes to add a punch to drinks and desserts during the winter months.
Mojito Mint Care
Mint grows rampantly when planted in the ground. The best way to contain its growth is to grow Mojito in a plastic pot. The plant will thrive in either a full-sun or part-shade location and does not require much fertilization. Use a soil-based potting mix that has added perlite for drainage. Plastic pots will retain moisture longer during the hottest part of summer and make watering less of a chore. Regular pinching back and using the youngest shoots will help to keep mints from blooming. Mint can be left to bloom late in the summer to provide nectar for beneficial pollinators. In fact, the white flower spikes make an exciting addition to a bouquet and dry beautifully for use in potpourri.
Growing Mojito Mint
Mojito mint can be harvested as soon as new growth appears. Use only the young, tender shoots without cutting into the older, woody branches. Mint is very hardy and can be planted in the garden after all danger of frost has passed in the spring. Pots of Mojito Mint may need to be moved to a sheltered location during the winter if they are in the path of prevailing winds and storms. Mojito Mint is hardy in USDA zones 6-9 but can easily be grown as an annual in colder climates.
Mint can be overly enthusiastic when planted directly in the garden. The spreading branches will form roots from every spot where they touch the soil. If you want the plant to be part of a garden, try burying potted Mint in the desired location.
Watering Mojito Mint
Mint tolerates a lot of neglect and is reasonably tolerant of both drought and over-watering. Water the container when the top 2-3 inches of soil are dry. Soak the pots until water runs from the bottom.
Feeding Mojito Mint
Mint is a very vigorous grower and rarely will require supplemental fertilizing. Mulch the top of the pots with organic compost to help keep the roots cool and provide a slow release of nutrition through the growing season.
