When most perennials have finished blooming in the heat of late summer, Coreopsis is still pushing out the blooms. Moonbeam Threadleaf Tickseed has been a tried and true garden performer since the the early 1990’s. The pale yellow blooms explode atop stems of fine, airy, dark green foliage. Drought and deer do not stand a chance against Moonbeam.
Moonbeam Tickseed can be used at the front of a garden border to highlight or contrast the larger plants. It works as filler in a mixed container planting. Once it starts blooming in early July, only the hard frosts of autumn will stop it. This perennial is tough and will give your garden a lovely informal cottage feel as it fills in the gaps left by early season bloomers. Coreopsis is a true American native plant of woodland edges and the prairies. It blends well with other “wild flowers” and ornamental grasses or is at home in a container as a permanent planting.
Moonbeam Threadleaf Tickseed
Moonbeam Threadleaf Tickseed is not fussy about soil needs. An average, well drained garden soil will provide all of the nutrition this perennial needs. If the blooming seems to slow down in following years, a slow release, balanced fertilizer can be used as growth begins in the spring. The pH requirement is as close to neutral as possible. 6.5 - 7.5 on the pH scale. Regular watering the first season is critical. After Tickseed is well established, extra irrigation will only be needed during hot spells.
Tickseed can be deadheaded on a regular basis to keep the blooms producing and the plant tidy. A good chop to the ground is the only real maintenance this herbaceous perennial needs in the late fall. If the blooms are left to set seed heads, birds will happily eat the seed during the winter. Dividing Coreopsis is very simple and should be done every 2-3 years to rejuvenate the plant.
Moonbeam Threadleaf Tickseed Spacing
Tickseed is a lower growing perennial, having a maximum height of 18 inches and a spread of 24-30 inches. The spacing should be 24 -36 inches on center. This will give the plants good air circulation.
