Moongate Mocha™ Clematis is defined by its dark, chocolate-toned foliage—an uncommon trait in vining clematis. It climbs 10–15 feet tall with a spread near 10 feet, wrapping structures in burgundy leaves that emerge warm and deepen as the season progresses. Against that moody backdrop, satin pink flowers with soft yellow centers appear in spring. The contrast is sharp and memorable. We plant it where guests will notice it first, because few vines offer this kind of color pairing so early in the season.
Bloom comes on old wood, covering the stems in late spring and drawing bees and butterflies into the garden. The foliage carries the show after flowers fade, giving this vine longer visual value than typical green-leaf selections. Clematis montana ‘Hyfatis07’ was introduced through the Proven Winners® ColorChoice® program for its rare bronze foliage and reliable vigor. Use it to cloak an arbor, thread through a fence, or frame a mailbox with something more refined than the usual climber. It also performs well trained along a sturdy trellis in a large container.
Moongate Mocha™ Clematis Care
Provide full sun to part sun, aiming for at least four to six hours of direct light for best flowering. In warmer zones, afternoon shade helps preserve foliage color. Soil must drain freely and should be moderately fertile with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Keep roots cool by shading the base with mulch or neighboring plants. Water deeply during establishment, then supply consistent moisture through active growth without allowing roots to sit in saturated soil. In reasonably fertile soil, one spring application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer is typically enough for the season. If growth appears weak in poor soil, a very light second feeding after flowering is acceptable, but do not overdo it.
Because it blooms on old wood, pruning is minimal. Remove only damaged or misplaced stems right after flowering if shaping is needed. Avoid cutting hard in spring, as that removes next season’s flower buds.
Moongate Mocha™ Clematis Spacing
Allow about 8–10 feet between vines in landscape installations so each plant can develop fully without crowding. For container planting, use a pot at least 18–22 inches wide with a substantial trellis anchored at planting time. In garden beds, let it climb behind climbing roses for layered spring color, or weave it through clematis-friendly companions like coral bells and salvia at the base to keep roots shaded and the display cohesive.
