Morello Hummingbird Mint has deep rosy flower spikes that bloom all summer and can be grown as an annual in colder USDA hardiness zones. The minty-scented flowers and foliage attract hummingbirds and butterflies late into the summer. Agastache is a great perennial herb that attracts all the local pollinators and beneficial insects to your garden.
Morello Hummingbird Mint is very low maintenance once it has been established in the garden. Expect it to be drought resistant as well as deer and rabbit resistant. Agastache is a native plant with few disease or pest issues, and Morello Hummingbird displays these qualities like a champ. Planted in large groups, Morello Hummingbird Mint looks great naturalized in a semi-wild area of the garden or a more formal herb garden.
Morello Hummingbird Mint Care
Agastache ‘Morello’ grows in either full sun or part shade and needs well-draining soil. Little to no fertilizing is necessary for this tough native perennial. Soils that are too rich will encourage spindly foliage growth with little flowering. One inch of water a week will help to establish a robust root system that requires less supplemental watering after 2-3 years. Mulch plants with 2-3 inches of organic compost in the spring to keep the roots cool during the summer while making the soil more moisture retentive.
Seasonal maintenance for Morello Hummingbird Mint is easy. Cut back the plant by one-third in the middle of the summer if the foliage and flowers start to decline. This will encourage the plant to produce a second flush of flowers late in the summer. Agastache is prone to heavy seeding, which can be avoided by deadheading plants as soon as the flower spike fades. Any unwanted seedlings are easily pulled in the spring. Agastaches can be grown in containers quite well and look great added to planters with other cottage garden or herb plants.
Morello Hummingbird Mint Spacing
Morello Hummingbird Mint has a mature height of 24-36 inches and a spread of 24 inches. Space plants at 18 inches on the center to provide adequate air circulation. Plant Agastache in a pot with at least a 12-inch diameter when growing in containers.
