Growing Zones
Mount Everest is truly the tallest of any ornamental Allium. The stems of giant, pure white, globe flowers can reach up to 50 inches tall. Mount Everest is also one of the only Alliums to have foliage emerge simultaneously with the flowers. Green strappy leaves last all summer to provide texture in the garden and make good camouflage for spent early spring bulbs.
Ornamental Alliums are easy to grow and care for in both the garden and container. These bulbs are drought resistant and multiply at a moderate rate, making them suitable for naturalizing in a garden border without fear of them taking over. Deer do not give ornamental Alliums a second glance. Mount Everest is perfect for the back of the border or as the focal point for a mixed seasonal container planting.
Mount Everest Allium Care
Mount Everest will grow in just about any type of soil as long as it is free draining. Amend heavy clay or light sandy soils with organic compost before planting. Alliums require about 1 inch of water a week and are best watered with drip irrigation or soaker hoses to keep the foliage as dry as possible. Full sun will help keep Mount Everest tall and straight. Alliums will tolerate a partly shady position but will tend to grow leggy and flop over onto other plants.
There is no pruning required for Mount Everest. Deadheading can be done to keep plants tidy, although florists prize the extra-large seedheads for dried and fresh arrangements. The seedheads can also be left in place all winter to provide interest and structure for the garden and can be cleared away in the spring as the new foliage emerges. Mount Everest can be divided every 3-4 years but does not mind being root bound in large groups.
Mount Everest Allium Spacing
Although the overall height of Mount Everest is 3-4 feet, the spread is less than 12 inches. Place plants close together in the garden or container at 8-10 inches apart, center on center. This will help the plants support each other while blooming.
