Mouseketeer Hosta has the “Mouse Ears” look with more presence, thanks to broader chartreuse-yellow centers that run cleanly down the petioles and brighten the whole clump. It stays nicely compact at about 8–10 inches tall and 16–18 inches wide, making it easy to insert along a shady path or at the front of a woodland border. Compared with ‘Blue Mouse Ears’, the center variegation is wider and the clump is larger without losing its rounded, tidy habit. This is our favorite small hosta because it pops in shade instead of blending into the greens.

Mouseketeer performs best in part shade to full shade, with a little morning sun helping the leaf color look cleaner and more defined. In early summer, short scapes rise just above the foliage with lavender-purple flowers that can draw hummingbirds. The thick leaves tend to handle minor slug pressure better than thinner-leaved hostas. Use it as edging, a container feature in shaded patios, or as a repeating accent to tie together mixed shade plantings.

Mouseketeer Hosta Care

Grow in part shade to full shade, preferably dappled light or morning sun with afternoon shade for best foliage color. Plant in moist, well-drained soil that’s high in organic matter, with a pH from slightly acidic to neutral, roughly 5.5–7.0. Avoid hot, reflected afternoon sun, which can scorch the lighter center.

Water when the top inch of soil starts to dry, keeping moisture consistent during summer heat since small hostas dry faster than big ones. Feed lightly in spring as new shoots emerge, using compost or a slow-release balanced fertilizer. It goes dormant in winter, and the foliage will collapse after frost.

Cut flower stalks off at the base once blooms fade to keep the clump looking crisp. After a hard frost, remove spent foliage to reduce hiding places for slugs and other overwintering pests. If you want more plants, divide in spring or during the growing season, but let each division keep at least a few eyes so it rebounds quickly.

Mouseketeer Hosta Spacing

Space plants about 18 inches apart so each mound can develop full shape without crowding. In containers, a 12–14 inch pot is a comfortable size for a single plant, or go wider if you want to mix companions around it. For landscape companions, pair it with tiarella for spring bloom and textural foliage, and add ferns nearby to build a layered woodland look behind the hosta. In containers, combine it with impatiens for seasonal color and dead nettle to trail over the rim in shade.
