Barberry is a useful landscaping shrub with a bad reputation for being invasive. Mr. Green Genes® Barberry has been developed with this in mind. This barberry is certified to be sterile and noninvasive while maintaining the easy care traits that make it popular for public and home gardens.
Mr. Green Genes® Barberry is a broad-leaf evergreen shrub perfect for use as a low-growing, informal hedge. The dense foliage stays fresh and perky even through the hottest summer days. Use the shrub as edging for a cottage garden or add it to a large planter with other evergreens for year-round interest. Berberis Worry free® Mr. Green Genes® looks excellent planted with ornamental grasses, daylilies, or under crape myrtle trees. Deer rarely browse barberry, and very few diseases affect the foliage.
Mr. Green Genes® Barberry Care
Plant barberry in either full sun or partial shade. The soil needs to be well drained with average fertility and texture. Amend heavy clay soils with organic compost to make them lighter and better draining. Fertilize shrubs in the early spring with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer. Water about one inch per week for the first 1-2 years until the roots are well established. Barberry is very drought tolerant and will need little supplemental watering in growing zones that have rain in the summer.
Mr. Green Genes® Barberry has a natural mounding shape that is perfect for the informal garden. Regular pruning can be done to shape these shrubs into more formal shapes or even simple topiary. A shearing twice a year is all that is needed to keep the shrubs in a formal shape. Barberry is hardy in zones 4-9 and requires no extra protection in the winter.
Mr. Green Genes® Barberry Spacing
This barberry is very compact and only reaches a mature height of 2-3 feet with a spread of 4-5 feet. Plant multiples of Mr. Green Genes® with 4 feet in between plants to form a gap-free hedge.
