Groundcovers are some of the hardest working plants in the garden. Not only should they have good looking foliage and flowers and sustain pollinators, groundcovers earn their place in the garden by helping to smother out weeds. Mrs. Moon Lungwort is an old fashioned favorite that ticks all of those boxes. Mrs. Moon has lightly spotted leaves and delicate pink flowers that bloom from spring into early summer.
Lungwort also makes a great edging plant for the shadiest of gardens and will grow well as a groundcover, even under Black Walnut trees. Not only is Mrs. Moon Lungwort deer and rabbit resistant, slugs completely leave its rough leaves alone. Companion plants for Lungwort are Hostas, Astilbe, Sweet Woodruff and Hellebores. The spotted leaves stay looking good throughout the summer, even after the plant has finished blooming.
Mrs. Moon Lungwort Care
Lungwort likes to have a very shady spot, but will tolerate sun early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Moist well, drained soil is important as is using drip irrigation or soaker hoses for supplemental irrigation. Mrs. Moon Lungwort dislikes overhead watering that would make the leaves wet. Powdery Mildew can be an issue late in the summer as the nights get colder and the soils stay wet.
Cutting back herbaceous perennials is best done in the early spring as the new growth emerges. Growth from the previous year provides mulch and insulation from the cold winter in the lowest of the hardiness zones. Fertilizing with a well balanced, slow release food in the spring will help to support good blooming and leaf production. Dividing Lungwort in the early fall will give new transplants time to establish roots before the winter. Make sure to mulch the new plants well.
Mrs. Moon Lungwort Spacing
Mrs. Moon Lungwort is a medium sized perennial. The mature height is 9-18 inches before blooming, with a spread of 18-24 inches. Spacing the plants at 20 inches on center is recommended.
